HLAs

•••

The easiest/best way for me to compare days or months from different years is to compare the “HLA” (high-low average). For example, both days might have a high of 100°F, but if one day’s low was 80 and the other day’s low was 70, their respective HLAs would be 90°F and 85°F.

January averages as the coldest month. December has been the coldest three times, and February twice. Feb. 2021 was the coldest month in my record-keeping, with Jan. 2011 in second place.

Typically, August is the hottest month every year, and July is second (the reverse was true 2016-2018 and 2022, and September was second in 2019). June is usually third-hottest, but September sometimes takes this spot. Aug. 2011 was the warmest month in my record-keeping, with Aug. 2023 in second place.

Yearly HLA averages, 2010-2022

2010-2022 Trendlines

These images show temperature variations for two days each year, from 2010 through 2023: Christmas Day (Dec. 25) on the left and June 6 (my anniversary) on the right. While the days were chosen somewhat randomly, the intent is to (eventually) show longterm variation of temperatures for individual days (as opposed to the other charts above, which show variations over years and/or months). I made the first one on a whim after overhearing several people argue about “Christmas day is always warm here” versus “this is warmer than usual”. The chart shows Christmas day warming over 13 years, with huge increases in 2016 and 2021 and drastic decreases in 2017 and 2022. The second one was added later, and doesn’t show the same trend.

In August, more than half the days can be expected to hit 100°F or higher. That’s happened thrice in July as well, but in no other months. 100-degree days generally begin in late June and last until mid-September. 2021 was extremely odd in that June and September saw 100-degree days while July and August did not.

August and July take turns having the most 90-degree days. June is usually a close third, with September a more distant fourth place. (2021 was unusual, with September ahead of July, and 2022 was odd also, with September ahead of August.) May and October always see 90-degree days as well, and April usually does too. It’s happened four times in March, three times in November, and once in February. To my knowledge, there has never been a 90-degree day in January or December.

It is exceedingly rare for any day to never rise above the freezing mark (32°F); of the 20 such days that occurred during my record-keeping, nearly half of them were in Feb. 2021, during the worst winter storm on record for the Killeen area.

May is the wettest month, and the only month that can be expected to produce above-average rainfall most years. July is the driest month, followed by December, February, and November. But the wettest month of each year moves around: May (5x), September (2x), October (2x), and once each for February, March, April, July, August, and November. (January, June, and December have never been the wettest month of any year during my record-keeping.)

February, June, August, and September each have three listings. January and April made the list four times, October five, and May leads with nine such days.

Daily Records

•••

For the eleven years I’ve covered Killeen’s weather, we’ve seen daily record lows, but quite a few more highs. (In a few cases, we’ve broken a record since we’ve lived here and then broke the same one again; I don’t count those twice.)

Daily record highs held by 2010-22: 209
Daily record lows held by 2010-22: 57

Click here to see the list of high/low records for each day.

So, more than half (57.1%) of all record highs are held by 2010-21, but only 15.57% of record lows were set during the same time period. Weather experts say it’s normal to see some record highs and lows set each year, since our records only go back a century or so. It is not normal to see four times as many highs as lows.

The coldest and hottest days since we’ve lived in Killeen are listed below. These aren’t all records, nor are they all of the records; these are just for high/low point reference.

I have also begun keeping track of HLA records — the warmest HLA for each day of the year, and the coolest HLA for each day of the year. However, without any historical resources, this list can only take into account my own records (beginning in 2010).

10-Year Averages

•••

When 2019 ended, I compiled 10-year averages for each column and section. This establishes a baseline of sorts — against which I can compare all future numbers. I will still keep an overall average for informational purposes, but all color comparisons will be to 10-year averages. I will try to note above which colors are relative to annual 10Y averages and which colors are relative to 10Y averages for each month.

See my Weather Methodology page for more information.
