April Temperatures
April’s 10-year temperature average is 69.80°F, a little cooler than the average October. (Occasionally, April is warmer than the same year’s October, though not by much.) The warmest April on record for Central Texas was in 2012, with an average of 74.87°F, beating the previous record set the year before. I couldn’t find when the coldest April was, but the coolest recent one was in 2018, averaging 63.32°F (which was oddly cooler than the preceding March and was followed by the warmest May on record.)
According to a variety of sources I searched, the coldest temperature ever recorded in April was 30°F, on April 7-8, 2007, while the warmest temperature April has ever seen was 98°F, on April 9, 1963, April 21, 1997, and April 17, 2006. During my record-keeping period (2010-21), the warmest April days were April 1, 18, and 26 (all in 2011), and April 24, 2020, tying at 96°F. The coldest April day was April 15, 2014, at 35°F. Five daily record lows occurred during the past 10 years, compared to 13 daily record highs.
April hasn’t seen freezing temperatures during my residence here. It averages 3.1 days that hit 90°F or higher. That average was pulled up by 14 such days in 2011 and seven in 2012; a typical April will see one or two days so warm. A quarter of the time, April never hits 90°F. (Oddly, twice in my records, April saw fewer 90-degree days than March — in 2016 and 2018. And once, in 2015, April saw more 90-degree days than May.)
Precipitation
Rainfall in April varies from 0.10 inches (in 2011) to 6.69 inches (2017). The only real pattern so far is that only one of the first six years was above average, while only one of the latter six years was below average. In other words, April has gotten wetter over the past 10 years (May has a similar pattern).
April averages 9.2 days per month that exhibit precipitation, with a maximum of 15 days (2015, 2016) and a minimum of two (2011).
Trends And Patterns
In the thirteen years I’ve been keeping track, April’s temperatures do not seem to follow any pattern, nor are April’s temps a good predictor for the year as a whole. Further, there seems to be little correlation between temperature and rainfall.
For the most part, April’s precipitation IS a good predictor of the year, in that if April is above average, so will the year be (exceptions: 2015, 2018, 2019).
Neither April’s temperatures nor its precipitation seem related or tied to any other months.
