July Temperatures

July’s 10-year temperature average is 87.24°F, in a close race with August for hottest month — less than a degree separates the two months’ averages. (For three years, 2016-2018, July was the warmest month of the year.) Sometimes, the hottest day of the year is in July: 2017, 2018, and 2020. The warmest July on record for Central Texas was in 2011, with an average of 90.48°F. I couldn’t find when the coolest July was, but the coolest recent one was in 2021, averaging 83.45°F.

According to a variety of sources I searched, the coldest temperature ever recorded in July was 60°F, on July 13 and 14, 1990, while the warmest temperature July has ever seen was 113°F, on July 23, 2018. During my record-keeping period (2010-21), the coolest July day was July 3, 2013, which saw a low of 64°F. Only two daily record lows occurred during the past 12 years, while a startling twenty-five daily record highs belong to the same period.

July averages 10.7 hundred-degree days per year — days in which the high is 100°F or warmer — second only to August. Hundred-degree days aren’t a given in July — 2021 had zero, but some years see as many as 30 (2011). As for ninety-degree days, 58% of the time all the days in July hit at least 90°F. The least I’ve recorded in 12 years was 22 in 2021.

July Precipitation

Precipitation

Rainfall in July varies from none (2011 and 2015) to 5.95 inches (2013), averaging 1.60 inches — the driest month in Central Texas. The only discernable pattern is that wet Julys are rare and unpredictable. The typical July sees fewer than two inches, and most Julys get less than an inch of rain.

July averages 4.5 days per month that exhibit precipitation — the fewest of all months, usually between zero and seven days — 2021 was an outlier with sixteen.

Trends And Patterns

In the ten years I’ve been keeping track, July’s temperatures seem to follow a regular up-and-down pattern — though with less variation than our winter months. Neither July’s temperature nor its precipitation match up well with the year’s average. In general, when July is ranier than usual, its temperatures are cooler than usual, though the correlation isn’t perfect.
