November Temperatures

November’s 10-year temperature average is 60.30°F, our fourth-coolest month each year. November is always warmer than December and January in any year. It is occasionally cooler than February (2013) and sometimes warmer than March (2010, 2015). The warmest November on record was in 2017, with an HLA of 65.38°F. I couldn’t find when the coolest November was, but the coolest recent one was in 2014, averaging 55.23°F.

According to a variety of sources I searched, the coldest temperature ever recorded in November was 19°F, on Nov. 27, 1993, but the coldest November day during my 12 years of record-keeping was 25°F on Nov. 12, 2019. The warmest temperature November has ever seen was 91°F, both on Nov. 8, 1988, and Nov. 2, 2017. Only four daily record lows occurred during the past 12 years, while seventeen daily record highs belong to the same 12-year period.

November rarely hits the 90°F mark; it’s only happened three times in the past 12 years (once each in 2010, 2012, and 2017). Freezing days are slightly more common in November; we average 1.6 days per November that reach 32°F or cooler (as many as five, in Nov. 2014, but as few as zero, about half the time. The high never dips below freezing.

Precipitation

Rainfall in November is more variable than the winter months (Dec., Jan., and Feb.), but less so than other months. It was only once the wettest month of any year (2022) — all other years, November has less than half the rain of any year’s wettest month. But it has been the driest month (2012) and second-driest (2017). Most Novembers see fewer than two inches of rain and the average is 1.9 inches.

November averages about seven days per month that exhibit precipitation — below the average for all months.

Trends And Patterns

In the years I’ve been keeping track, November’s temperatures seem to be in a regular up-down pattern, with two or three years above average (2010-12, 2016-17, 2020-21) followed by two or three years below average (2013-15, 2018-19). It’s one of the few months that matches well with the yearly temperature average (if November is above/below average, the year will be too, 90 percent of the time). A good predictor for November is March, as seen in the image at top: most of the time, if March is above/below average, then November will be too.

November’s rainfall tends to decrease when temperatures rise, but it isn’t a perfect correlation. There doesn’t seem to be a correlation between November’s rainfall and the annual average.
