Nuclear missiles, blueprints and bombs,
Mad terrorists and such
We don’t need them very much
All they do is — clutter up our lives,
And cause us pain and strife
We lead a complicated life
It’s controlling what you do
We lead a complicated life
Making a robot out of you
We lead a complicated life
And you don’t know what to do
The confusion in the world is gettin’ so bad,
Tryin’ to keep up with every passin’ fad,
The pace of change is gettin’ so fast,
You’d better hurry up, or you’ll be last
(repeat chorus)
So many decisions to make — every day
I don’t know what to do — I need to get away
I seem to get into fights — anyway
We need to pray to Jesus — He’s made a Way
We’re havin’ problems — left and right
We need to turn to Christ — He’s the Light
Only He can save us — from our stress
A spiritual bailout — from our mess
(repeat chorus)
As you’re trying to reach the summit
Of your life
God can overcome it —
Your complicated life
(repeat chorus)
We lead a complicated life —
But God has made a way for me and you
Me... and... you... Yeah!
My sisters and I performed this song in “concerts” for my parents. Over the years, changes were made without adjusting the original date. For example, the original chorus only has four lines (not six). The second verse used to be the third verse, and so on. The “so many decisions” stanza was not added until some time in 1987. The image below shows one early version and marked changes:
It should also be pointed out that I was heavily inspired by “Beat the System” and “Computer Brains”, both by Petra.
