What were my parents expecting when they had me?
Were they expecting to have 4 children like they did?
Did they want me to be a serious, intelligent person,
Or a partying, happy-go-lucky, wild kid?
Did they expect blond hair or black?
Was I supposed to be a star in baseball or track?
Were they expecting me to be neat and orderly, with a spotless room,
Or did they worry that I would be messy and unkempt, and never think about being groomed?
Did they assume that I would fall in with the group of friends that was right,
Or were they expecting to have to pick me up, drunk, late at night?
Did they want me to be smart, and have a perfect SAT
And have prestigious universities falling all over me?
Did they want me to bring home a cheerleader as my girl,
Or was I supposed to have a girl with a perfect character, or one with money, gold, and pearls?
Maybe my mom wanted me to learn how to cook really great meals,
Or maybe my dad expected me to be a mechanic, and love to put on tire seals.
Did he want me to be a pilot, and live a life of aircraft?
Or maybe an awesome witness for the Lord, even when other kids laughed?
Lazy, or hard-working; fat, or thin;
Tall, or short; pentecostal, or catholic within;
Fast, or slow; rich or poor
Responsible or not; less or more?
What were they looking for?
Did they find it, I wonder?

This is one of my early examples of an actual poem, rather than a “song”.
