I drink the cup of sad farewell
I leave behind my whole known world
I leave to go to where I know
Your peace and joy will fill my soul
It’s not that they are absent here
But all I feel is yesteryear

Friends you’ve been, and good to me
But time has come for me to see
Friends as precious as you are rare
But friends anew await me there
A smile is on these trembling lips
Your love will help me make the trip

If God permits, I will return
To see all those from whom I learned
From a small lad as I grew up
You helped me walk, though life was rough
So now I run and weary not
And win all wars which I have fought

So, shed some tears, while smiling too
And one day I’ll return to you
I’ll ne’er forget the love you showed
As I travel on down the road
Hold your head up and I will too
Hearts together, all the way thru.

Originally inscripted with: “To: My family, my church, and all else I leave behind”, written when I was leaving for college.
