I wrote 77 poems in 1999, my fourth-highest yearly total, behind 2000, 2001, and 1990, respectively. Only four of them were written in the first five months of the year, and then I began to hit my stride in summer, partly due to the influence of K.L.M. But it wasn't until September, when she grew distant (and left in October) that the words came gushing out in a flow that didn't slow until late in 2001 and didn't end entirely until the summer of 2002.

More than half of all the poems I ever wrote (as of 2014) were part of this massive two-year burst.

Also, early in 1999, the reader starts to see veiled, hesitant references to the removal of religious thinking and a fading belief in a god. By September it was more obvious: "I am only one more soul that has walked that road, and found it to be lacking" (from Enough). I referred to God as sleeping, deaf, absent, and as a "genie". By November, I admitted: "Who knows what the Purpose is? Not I" (from No Disney People), and in December, I wrote that I couldn't feel "Heaven's touch". This was a huge step for me, to challenge my previous beliefs, the very foundations of my world. It was not to be conclusive at this time. That would wait another decade.
