Endangered Hearts

I’m looking through the field glasses
I have my parabolic microphone
Motion detectors ‘N’ electronic tagging devices
But there are no wildlife preserves for hearts
Though they’re now on the
Endangered Species List
They’ve been hunted
They’ve been exploited
And the hearts have moved westward
To escape urban expansion
Maybe underground
Maybe up in a tree
Or in caves
So many natural enemies
So weak, so delicate
So naïve
But if you see one in the wild
You will never forget
The sight
When you gasp with delight
