Helpless memories now slip, then fade
No one knows why or where they go
But they are all that shape each word I say

Can you remember that lost fateful day
From it, what do you have now to show
Helpless memories now slip, then fade away

Smells and pictures form the words I pray
Half-forgotten breezes that blow
But they are all that shape each word I say

So much I can, but not enough that I may
Faded pain and joy never again to know
Helpless memories now slip, then fade away

Blesséd and curséd past times are they
Upon reflection there’s recollection slow
But they are all that shape each word I say

Mental records and archives have lost their way
And what I forgot, I just don’t know
Helpless memories now slip, then fade away
But they are all that shape each word I say
