We act like we’re surprised to learn
That others in the world hate us
That they could kill us
And our precious soil has been bloodied
In our wounded pride and confusion
We seem to have forgotten
That our greatest homeland wounds
Were inflicted by we ourselves
How many are killed every single year
Murdered by Americans in crimes of passion
Murdered by Americans who can’t control their liquor
Murdered by parents who leave their children in dumpsters
How many had to die in the 1860s
Just so the Federal Government could
Take full and final control
And, oh, how we’re finally so patriotic
And we finally stopped burning the flag
Or did we?
I will say the ‘pledge’ as I salute
With tears in my eyes
But there’s always that pain in my heart
Remembering our hidden sins
And our dark history — dark red
With the blood of my fathers
Whose dream died when their hearts stopped beating
In this land of ours —
Oh, wait! I forgot! It isn’t ours at all!
That’s right, I just remembered...
We stole it all from red-skinned savages
Right before we raped and massacred them
But, oh yes, of course I’m horrified
