Moon-Watching

I’ve had some dreams
And then some
(Boy! Have I had some dreams!)
And I’ve changed my mind
About a lot of things
Moved from one place to another
Lost some friends, made some friends
Lost respect for myself
Then proved to myself that I was worthy
Of a second chance
I wrote some words
Then threw them all away
And wrote some more
And watched the Moon wax and wane
Three hundred and forty-one times
Some things I took for granted
They have all faded like a gold treasure
Lost at the bottom of the sea
My dreams, my friends, my respect, my life
But the ball of dusty rock
A quarter of a million miles distant
Still waxes and wanes
Grayish-white face that glows with reflected sunlight
An airless watcher of Destiny’s tides
I hear the coyotes howling
I imagine lovers loving
I see the sailors sailing
All guided by the light of the Moon
Lead on.
