Somewhere behind me

Somewhere behind me
Before the setting flaming sun
Before it all ended
Before I got tired
Somewhere behind me
Before I sat down
Before the lights went out
Before I closed my eyes
Somewhere behind me
I can hear the whispered promises
It’s a sure thing
They said
You can’t fail
They said
It’ll all turn out okay
They said
Somewhere behind me
Sometime before now
As I lay down
Hold my aching ribs
Sobbing my aching sobs
That are silent
My sorrow is not worth
All the noise
Somewhere behind me
I made my mark
I lived my life
I battled Destiny
Somewhere behind me
I had some good friends
We had some good times
Usually after dark
Somewhere behind me
Sometime before this
This lonely hole
This boring routine
This waiting for the end
Somewhere behind me
I lost the beauty
I found the cynicism
I packed my bags
And left all that I knew
Somewhere in a semi-forgotten past
I talked of dreams that would never last
And the stars fell from the heavens
Landing on angels who failed
Sometime long ago
I forgot all that I would ever know
And the truth is buried again
Buried here in me
Or somewhere behind me
