That Never Shone

Less sure of myself than I’ve ever been
Wanting but failing to pick up the pen
Inspiration strikes when I’m least aware
And almost never when I’m prepared

The clock strikes bedtime and I’m having thoughts
About battles that I’ve already fought
But things I never took the time to write down
From long before coming to this town

There’s just one way to make sure I find peace
I must set it down, piece by piece
Organize it and edit it and proofread every word
Until it’s the most boring thing you've ever heard

The story of a struggle, the story of the Light
An epic adventure that happened mostly at night
A tale of losing and finding and regaining
With many prayers during thundering raining

Little can make you feel so alone
As to cut into your soul, to the bone
To turn everything completely inside-out
(It’s doubt and faith I’m talking about)

Lucky. That’s what you are if you never
Had to go so far as to fully sever
Yourself from your life of the past
And then try to do it right at the last

And still dealing with persistent fear
And whispering behind my back, in my ear
Of all that I’ve lost and never regained
No matter how hard the poor sky rained

It’s a story of Light and Dark and between
And beyond it all, I think is what I mean
An adventure a man must experience alone
Kindling a fire for the light that never shone

I couldn’t say it at the time, but I was working on my announcement that I was an atheist, which was made public on February 10, 2015.
