Next Step

On a warm summer’s night in late September
The hour is late and I begin to remember
And list the questions that once caused wonder
Topics that age has made me loathe to ponder
I’ve answered a few and tossed out the rest
I need to keep my mind calm so that I can rest
But new musings have taken the old ones’ place
So often that it’s difficult to keep the pace

For example, what’s the next step in human evolution?
Will we ever find a way to perfect nuclear fusion?
Will superstitions finally fade as science teaches us?
If there are ETs, what happens when one of them reaches us?
Can we change the world enough to feed starving masses?
If we can build robots, how long until they teach classes?
So many questions, and not one with a conclusion
But they’re all part of the next step of human evolution
