Remember when the sky was falling
When everything we heard was apalling
And we knew it was all about to end?
I heard your voice as you were calling
Into conspiracy theories enthralling
And then your mind started to bend
I heard you blaming banks and Jews
As you read your so-called news
And wondered if you’d be okay
I know it’s hard, but you can choose
You don’t have to force yourself to lose
The end will be quieter than you say
The title refers to “tinfoil hats”, a common derogatory slang term today, used when
someone is obviously dredging up long-debunked conspiracy theories, reading ultra-right-wing blogs
or “news” sites. What I thought of as I wrote were those people — even intelligent
people — who’ve shared the same doubts and fears as I have, yet instead of careful
deliberation they seem to have gone off the deep end. The list of names is getting closer to me
all the time.
