They wondered why I wanted
To cut the ties that bind
They pointed out how they’d lived
And that they tried to be kind
In my response I noted
That all of them had voted
Against the values that they claimed
But pretended they couldn’t be blamed
If you’re not a racist, then
Why vote for the racist man?
If you believe in kindness, why
Push the least-kind plan?
Don’t ask me to excuse your indiscretions
While still trying to give the impression
That you didn’t or don’t understand
You knew all along that I’d make my stand
