That night I saw an angel
I was as drunk as I could be
We were drinking in a bar
At Asher and University

Then I saw the angel
In a miniskirt, on a stool
He was pretty as could be
And suffering all the fools

A friend of mine said, “You know
She’s got a dick under the dress”
I said, “He’s still a human
And we could all use a kindness”

I offered the next round
The angel politely refused
Said, “I’m off-duty now
I’d rather not be abused”

A face and voice full of fear
In a town that didn’t care
I knew what it felt like, and
Made sure I didn’t stare

I paid the waitress anyway
Said, “I’m just a nice guy”
Later when the lady thanked me
I think he was about to cry

Next time I see an angel
I hope I’m just as kind
In this world of darkness
A friend can be hard to find

Recalling an incident in the late 1990s.
