And what I need to find
To erase my doubt and fear
I’m asking one last time
For an eye-opening sign
And I’ll need it to be clear
It only seems right and fair
A last chance to take me there
Though I doubt I’ll ever know
The debt needs to be paid
The promise that I made
Twenty-five years ago
The “promise that I made twenty-five years ago” was to be an atheist if God didn’t show me a clear and undeniable sign of his existence. This promise was recorded in my journal when I was 17.5 years old, in early 1990.
I “came out” as an atheist on Feb. 10, 2015, when I was 42.5 years old.
